SSH Welcome Message

What file sets the SSH welcome message?

Try /etc/motd. It's the message-of-the-day file, which also is used when you boot into your machine.

Is there a way to set variables in it? Such as the last time the user logged in or the say "Hello <username>" where username is the user that just logged in?
