    Linux Changes IP?

I have cable internet and mainly the IP is static, but from time to time it does change, but rarely. Now I was on XP and I had an IP, and then restarted and now I am on Ubuntu, and strangely I have a different IP. Now I think that if I get back on XP it will get back to the other IP...

    Hmm strange isn't it?

Generally your OS gets a "lease" on the IP and this is identified by the MAC address. This wouldn't change between XP and Linux since it is hardware so yes, this is a bit strange. Maybe your lease ran up (usually last 3 days or so, may be less for your cable company - I've seen as little 3 hours).

No It's not, It's happening all the time. For example just now I was on XP and had an IP, then I restarted in Ubuntu and had another IP.

The thing is that on XP I have the same IP and on Ubuntu I have the same IP always. I mean for example if on XP I have 1.1.1.1, on XP it is always 1.1.1.1 but when I reboot on Ubuntu it is always 2.2.2.2

SO it is NOT a coincidence. In fact it's a great thing for me

Hmm, that is very odd. Why is it a great thing for you? Now you can't connect back to your computer from anywhere if you IP is always changing.
