    Re: Help newbie

The five most common Linux Distro's are these:
    1. Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu
    2. Fedora
    3. LinuxMint
    4. OpenSUSE
    5. Mandriva
Of the five above, I'd suggest sticking with an Ubuntu branch, LinuxMint, or Mandriva. Fedora and OpenSUSE may not be as easy for a new Linux user.

Each download is what is called an ".ISO" image, and you'll need software that burns that ISO to a CD. When you've burned it onto a CD, you can, with Ubuntu, install it directly on your Windows installation to share, or you can alternatively restart your computer with any of those above CD's (except OpenSUSE...) and start the LiveCD version, and test out Linux on your computer. I'd suggest if you've got the time and the CD's to try each of the distro's and find which one you prefer!

Linux is freeware in the sense that you don't have to pay anything for most distributions. It is open-source, which means you actually have the ability to see how it works, not just use it. It's better than freeware

It's more than freeware, it's Free Software. Freeware normally doesn't allow you to distribute it on your own, or sell it on your own either, while Free Software does. Also, Free Software allows you to use their source code in your own software that you distribute.
