Wrecking a Hard Drive on Installation?

Have there been any common instances where installing linux can corrupt or crash a hard drive? If so, how can the problem be avoided?

Why not nuke it and start again? nothing wrong with reformatting but i guess its only on rare cases where a Linux installation can wreck a drive.
