Ubuntu, and blank screen

Well I installed Ubuntu (the latest version) on one of my computers and now it does not boot... GRUB comes up, I select Ubuntu and afterwards only a blank screen is shown, no errors, no progress bars.. nothing!!

What should I do?

Was the installation of linux successful? or it displayed some errors?

Once thta happened to one of my friends at school. He edited the GRUB conf file and he ended up messing it badly... and he had to boot from the live cd to edit the conf file again to make it good.
