    External HDD

    Hi,
Planning to buy an external USB hdd.. it's a portable HDD... do I need any 3rd party software for it to install or just plug in and mount?

    Thanks.

My experience has been "plug in and mount".

What type of HD is it? I wrote a tutorial about Maxtor: TotalPenguin - More Linux than Kernel 2.6 - Getting your Maxtor OneTouch External USB Hard Drive to work on SuSe

On most modern Linux Kernels I've noticed that USB devices are automatically detected and in most cases mounted. Sabayon and Ubuntu both do a great job of this.

It's not a Maxtor, but I'll look into that tutorial.. Thanks.

And yes I have Ubuntu, so most probably it will be plug and play. Thanks.

You can just plug in and mount. Hdd is an exciting option to improve the storage capacity of our computers. Linux makes the experience great. I am using Ubuntu and an external HDD. I just plugged in and my computer automatically recognized it.

I think you just have to plug in and mount. It is just like your thumb drive or flash drive which Linux auto detects it.
