When attempting to boot one of my older Linux boxes the other day I get thrown into single user mode with the error "Is this the right Kernel for your hardware?". I can see where it says trying to find "PPP" device and fails. What is PPP? How can the kernel not be for this computer when nothing has changed? I haven't even booted it in months much less messed with any of the hardware.
Possibilities:
1) you've got a hardware failure (PPP device would be something like a modem or ethernet card?)
2) a file got corrupted on your hard-drive
WP nailed it, I can't think of any other reason this would occur if you haven't changed your hardware.
Hmm, odd. After a couple of reboots it started working again. Any idea on that?
Did you have any devices switched on or off? I know some Laptops have a wireless switch. Perhaps your computer has something like that?
