Firewire in Linux

I have an external HDD with firewire... Can I use this with a linux Distro? Does it work?

I've never tried Firewire but I assume it does work out of the box. USB hdds do, you need to format them for Linux sometimes though.

But doesn't Linux read and write on NTFS?

Yes, the latest and greatest kernels do.

Than that means, that if they do we won't need to format it for Linux, right?

Yeah, that's what I meant.. if Linux reads and writes on NTFS why should we format it for us to use it on firewire?
