Linux Software Compatibilities?

Linux is compatible with most open-source software applications, right?

With WINE won't almost every application for Windows be compatible with Linux?

Specifically, is Adobe PhotoShop (and other Adobe software like flash etc), Java, and Microsoft Zune (and other mp3 player software) compatible with Linux?

No, most application won't even be compatible through Wine on Linux. You are able to get lots of software to work, and sometimes even to work 100%. But! advanced software like games, graphics editors, etc. will most likely not work 100%, and will have minor or major bugs. Generally, I'm trying to use Wine as little as possible. If I wanted Windows applications I wouldn't use Linux, but Windows.

Well IMO the reason why Windows applications are even being made and created so much is because that's the major OS that people are using, correct?

And can you at least tell me if PhotoShop works with WINE/Linux?

According to Wine themselves, Photoshop is able to run on Linux. But why don't you try GIMP instead? Then you won't have to use Wine.

GIMP is very different. I tried it a few years ago...a good while ago...and I didn't have a clue how to use it. I am not one for learning new things like this, I am not good at graphic design, what I do in PhotoShop is basic and is all I know.

Can GIMP open PSD files? And how does GIMP compare to PhotoShop in ease of use? I use blending options and filters a lot in PhotoShop, that's basically all I know how to do.

GIMP is able to open almost all existing files which have something to do with graphics. I'm not really a designer-guy, so I can't tell how easy GIMP is to use, sorry.

But, like I said, it seems like Photoshop (CS2, not CS3) is very well-working using Wine.

Well I think that not almost every application will work, but almost every application will not work. Wine still needs a lot of work, but it's improving.

And about GIMP, personally I used it a little, the GUI is a little crazed up with tons of windows running around, not like Photoshop, you have one main window and the other windows are in it.

Most applications won't work through Wine but you can get most games to work through other emulators.

I don't like Gimp much either. If you look at photoshop on the Mac though it has little windows running around everywhere as well (instead of one window with all the docks contained in it). I'm not sure why they made it like that in Mac and not Windows but I prefer the Windows version. Other applications in Mac are like that also though (like Microsoft Office components). I think it is a "Mac" thing.....

Anyway, There is almost an equal "free" app for every paid app there is in Windows. You just have to shop around and find the one you like.

Therein lies one of my major pet peeves: the advent of a number of bugs that can mess things up or make them harder to work.
