Default retrieving information from a web page

Hello, alright here is what I am trying to get done. I need to develop a program, that can retrieve information from a live website site (such as numbers from a table), save it into variables, and use it to preform calculations. I was wondering if there is anyway to do this in Java, as that would be easiest for me because I am most familiar with java programming; however, if this can not be done in java, what programming language should I use and what would be the basics of how it would be done in the language? thanks a lot

I'm not sure if this can be done in Java as I'm not familiar with Java web utilities. However, I know for a fact you can create a script to do that in PHP and performe calculations on the data or save the output as XML and then use a Java App to parse the XML and use the data to perform your calculations.

I know it can be done in C sharp, here is a tutorial for a web scraper Ripping Data on the Web - The Code Project - Internet / Network

Hope that helps.
