Hey everyone. I was always intimidated of higher certain classes in high school and just didn't think of myself as extremely smart. Well eventually I matured a little (not to mention played about 3000 games of chess lol) and saw things from a different perspective and basically I'm not afraid to learn and study now. I have a lot of experience with computers but only doing fairly basic tasks. However, I think this could be a field I would be motivated in since I can help people (who doesn't use a computer?), HATEEEE spyware, viruses and pop-ups, and well a decent salary wouldn't kill me either lol. I've read half of programming for dummies and I'm breezing through stuff (and harder) that I eeked out a C- in a programming class in high school.
Okay so here's my dilemma and question. I'm 21 but unfortunately have something doctors think is rheumatoid arthritis in both hands and arms. I can perform Any task as well as anyone else...but not for long, I get fatigued and have great pain with frequent use. Writing is real tough, lifting is bad, typing isn't great on me but it's easier than writing. Right now I'm working part time saving money for school. Is there any job/field in programming where there isn't a large amount of typing involved? If not, is there for computers in general? Perhaps general repair/problem shooting I thought but I am certainly no expert. hehe I saw someone's signature today when I joined in code and I just thought Wtf is that... lol But anyway I think that is about all, thank you so much for any information or advice. |

Hey Qgambit, welcome to the forum! My mother has rheumatoid arthritis so I can relate to how you feel. She got it around 40 years old. She has it in her entire body.
I think with any computer job you will be doing a lot of typing but working would hardware would probably require the least amount of typing. How long can you type for before it starts hurting? Does moving a mouse hurt as well? If not, you could be a CAD designer or graphics designer. They make good money and work with computers.

Thanks for the welcome guys.
Well it's hard to say as I don't do random hand tests for the hell of it. I'm on the computer probably 2 hours a day but most of that is reading and thinking not typing and scrolling. If we're talking pure nonstop typing I doubt I could go for more than 3 minutes. But if it's more like type a little here, think, scroll, click type, load, type i could go maybe 40 minutes without a break. Anything with design might not be up my alley. My 12 year old little brother is great at anything artistic but I still struggle with stick figures heh. Maybe the hardware idea is plausible though. |

With CAD design you wouldn't be doing so much graphical work as you would just placing things in certain places. I've never done it and not an expert but I think the bulk of the work is dragging/dropping and thinking.
To answer you other question, with programming I often stop and think and sometimes will stop for up to an hour to "figure" things out. It is sort of like writing in that you have to stop to brainstorm. I'm very bad for not doing flow-charts or psuedocode so I often have to stop for logic thoughts. I do go in spurts where I code for hours on end without stopping though.

Some of the RAD languages like VB and Delphi might work for you. They involve a lot of mouse work, along with the typing. I'm not sure how the balance would work for you, though.
