You can always add watches or set a bread point, move your mouse over the variable when it's break will show the value.

Reading the whole text file into memory is good when the text file isn't too big. Otherwise it will have to be read line by line.

Find a project, put all your effort into completing the project, then you will learn. Going through tutorial and books will only give you head start but will not learn as much as complete a project.
