I find XHTML easier, I started learning that by myself and I got into a web design course at school and they were teaching HTML and I found it harder to use HTML since I know more about XHTML.

It usually isn't such a bad thing if your page fails validation. When I write pages, the only errors there are are the ones that were built into the awful template that was provided for me.

Besides, not all web browsers actually follow the standards themselves.

Well, a nice allegory.

However, this is not the future. New technologies or ideas, for example the "Semantic Web" should be the future that we're going on.

From what I've read about XHTML, it's a lot more customizable than HTML, so I suppose that's a good thing.

What make XHTML better is it has rules so to speak that if you follow them your pages will work better in all web browsers. Where as HTML is less strict, so to speak as long as the code is correct it will work but not necessarily the same way in every browser.

Apart from the required accuracy of the code, there's not really much in it. Often you can get away with mixing and matching the code - it's not ideal, but most browsers have no trouble understanding it.
