What is the best way to create a counter that keeps track of hits to a particular web page?

I would create a PHP counter only because it is so easy but you could use several different languages or just get a free one like google analytics.

Or your hosting company will probably provide stats as well if you ask them

Do you want to create one, or simply get one off of a site such as http://www.statcounter.com

i just switched some sites over to Google Analytics and it's pretty amazing, not to mention free

http://www.google.com/analytics/

I've also used eXtreme Tracking which is pretty basic but easy, for their free plan however you do have to put their logo on your page...
