Hey guys,
My frined showed me a cool site about a mounth ago and I was waiting to see if he had problems with it before I posted it here. It is called DynDNS and it allows you to conect your PC to the interweb. Usualy when you do this you have to pay for a static IP address wich can cost more than hosting. By using DynDNS you can use your plain old dynamic IP or go with the static if you choose. You also have the option of using your own domain or one of their cool subdomains for your site. You have to set your computer up as a server still but that is rather easy if you use Zend Server Comunity edition. Obviously this is not somthing you would want to use for a site that gets hundreds or thousands of hits a day but this is a nice, easy, and free way to get a web presence. The URL is DynDNS.com: Free DNS Hosting, E-mail Delivery, and VPS Hosting There is also a video blog that explains how to set it up but i dont have the url. If myfrined calls me back this week i will post a link to resources that help you set it up.
I've actually had an account with them for some time. My router will login and update my new IP with DynDNS automatically. Very cool feature and I can access my home network from anywhere.
I remember using one back in my teens, they've been around for a long time.![]()
Can you use this with a domain name? so let's say for example if you have a server hosted somewhere, and the server is down.. with this you can change the ip to a mirror server? Therefore having your website always up and running?
No, because this has it's own domain name. tcm.somedomain.com which resolves to <dynamic IP>. For what you are speaking of you need remote DNS with failover support. They are pretty cheap. The one we use here is about $40 per year.
And does it take a long time for it to resolve? Like, when you change the DNS on a domain it takes about 24 hours to be up and working (for the ISP to update the DNS etc..)
Thanks for the feedback. That is very useful.

These services are great. I actually use no-ip: No-IP - Dynamic DNS, Static DNS for Your Dynamic IP
