That seems a little pricey for VPS servers with such low stats. For instance, I have a test/secondary dedicated server that is only $29 and is just a little worse than you VPS 512 plan. Not to mention, VPSes are notorious for crashing and not handling loads well.

Do you offer any discount?

Jordan, Normally VPS machines are very stable and actually faster than some of the lower end dedicated servers. It all depends on how the host handles overselling. I'm very happy with my vps machines. I still need to blog about part 3 to handle my vps experience, so stay tuned for that.

As for the plans above, cpanel will not run comfortably on anything less than 384MB of ram, but the addons are average cost. I'd say that for xen virtualization, the prices above are average.

Hey Jordon, no at this time we are not offering any discounts on our packages. These have just been released, and are a significant improvement over our previously managed only VPS packages.

While these are maybe not the cheapest VPS plans, this is due to a number of factors/benefits:

1. These servers are running RAID 10, so means you don't have to worry about a hard drive failing - as you would have to worry about on a $30/m dedicated server.
2. These VPS plans are running Xen, which is not dynamic virtualization - but rather fixed virtualization - this means you are getting a fixed amount of resources, and we don't oversell our servers! It also means your VPS is usually a lot more stable. Our customers have noted that our VPS accounts are quite stable as a result.
3. We use very high end server grade hardware, not cheap desktop hardware. You will probably find the low end dedicated servers are using cheap desktop hardware and/or old hardware that is more likely to fail.
4. You have a control panel to manage your VPS which allows you to rebuild your VPS without a wide range of operating systems, as well as access a file manager which in the event that you mess up some configuration you will be able to access your files even when your VPS is down. You also have the ability to access the console of the VPS, which is just like being logged in via a keyboard and monitor! If the network is down the VPS, you will be able to use this to troubleshoot and bring the server back online.

If you want raw processing power, you will probably find the cheap dedicated server is the way to go. However if you want something to host on, or do testing then a VPS is probably the way to go as you have the data security and flexibility to easily reload the VPS, and also troubleshoot through the file manager without even having the VPS running!

Yes, I have to agree - VPS accounts are actually quite stable, especially Xen. This is why we use Xen for our Virtualization, as is much more stable! Its actually not possible to oversell on Xen, so you are guaranteed a much faster VPS.

Regarding cPanel, it actually does run on 256MB quite well as of recently. cPanel has created new optimizations for VPS servers which drastically reduces memory usage. We have a number of clients running cPanel without any issues - however if you have a busy site, or require lots of PHP/Apache addons then you may need more.

In my experience they were not so reliable. This may have just been a bad experience which makes me dislike VPS servers but I've heard others say similar things. Perhaps the ones I tried were very oversold.

I find that I am averaging 300 MB of memory usage with cpanel now and at peak times, I'm up around 350MB of usage, so I can never recommend less than 350MB of guaranteed memory.

I have found that Xen will slow down dramatically when it taps into the swap space, so its best to have enough dedicated ram for any vps.

Hey Jordan, there is a high chance you were on an oversold server! Many providers oversell their VPS servers, however we utilize Xen which makes it near impossible to oversell resources, as we provide fixed resources on a server.

If you were using something like Virtuozzo or OpenVZ, these do not use true virtualization, so you would be restricted with what you can do. We utilize Xen on our VPS plans, which is like having your own dedicated server.

As with any server, if you start using swap space it slows down significantly, as you are using hard drives to store rather than RAM. If your swap space is extremely slow, this may have something to do with your host (depends how they have configured their swap space).

Lxadmin is not the most stable software, and we have found clients find cPanel more stable - but has the downside of consuming more RAM!
