That seems like a lot. Especially when I can buy a 500 GB hard drive for $60.00.

you could, yes, but it wouldnt have the connection of a server on theplanet, and the point of my backups are that they arent on your hdd, you want your backups to be on a different server, different network if possible, imo.

I agree, they are a bit too high, what do you think they should be

I really have no idea what they should be. I just use devices in my network for backup, isolated secure boxes, standalone devices etc.

Also I can get a 1 TB external HD for like 200 dollars. Which is the same thing as 4 months of you backing up 15 GBs of my stuff.

External Drive Prices Newegg.com - External Hard Drive, USB Hard Drives, Portable Hard Drive, WD External Hard Drives

It kind of just depends on how smart the buyers are.

The backup plans above are for website server backups, rather than personal backups. The point being that it is turned on 24x7 and connected to the internet with T1 or better. A good server admin does a daily backup and, unless it is automated, people would forget to download a local copy. It would take a hosting company owner with 100 clients a while to download the backups. An automated solution to a fast connected server ensures that daily backups are always taken.

Another thing to point out is that you want your backups to be in a geographically different location. Sure, you can throw a second hard drive onto your server but what if the data center explodes (a little dramatic but there could be a bomb, tornado, flood, etc) - you loose all of your website data.

All that being said CodeCall server currently does two backups, soon to be three, one of which is to PhpForFun's server.

That's true I didn't really consider the fact that something catastrophic could happen to your office, home, etc. The backup is probably worth it then.

Looking at the initial thread, I still believe it is a bit high priced. What can a person do with 250mb which costs $15.95 a month?

Re: backup plans on my server

After spending a good 8 hours researching backup plans similar to this one, these prices are about average, although I'd consider them a bit high too.

    $5 a gig doesn't sound bad. 1gb = $5 a month. A lot of sites only need 1-3gb. With increments at 5gb you can do custom plans/discounts.
