oh and this is what I had found but I don't completly understand Linux so I'm trying to figure it out

I'd say Ubuntu unequivocally. There are others that are undoubtedly as good as it (and maybe slightly better) but there are so many people using Ubuntu that there's more help available and that's really worth more than any technical issue.

Personally I'd set it up in a virtual machine so that you can run it from within Windows and don't have to worry about messing up your computer.

For that you'd need a decent machine with at least 1GB of RAM.

To get it running the VMware image for the latest Ubuntu is

http://isv-image.ubuntu.com/vmware/U...sktop-i386.zip

and you can get VMware player from here

Download VMware Player, Free VMware - VMware

If you're unfamiliar with virtualisation. Basically this will set up an isolated OS within a window on the host OS (in this case Windows XP).
