This is a frequently asked question, and there's so many answers.

Personally, I suggest Python (I've said that sentence plenty of times now...) It's an easy, robust and powerful language, that's relative easy to master. It have a big user database, so it's easy to get started, and find resources. You've to keep in mind that Python isn't a fast language, so if you want to make really fast applications, you should consider other languages like C, C++, C# or other, though they're harder to learn and master.

There's other alternatives for starter languages too, and there's many more than those I'm going to write now; Visual Basic, Pascal and Delphi (Pascal's successor) All of them have great tools, and some of them is even free. They're all easy to learn and some relative robust and powerful languages.

My friend suggests either Perl or Python. And Python looks quite cool, do you suggest any good websites or e-books?

Pascal was developed as a language specifically for teaching people how to program. It is a relatively simple language that will get you started on the basics of programming, but will not introduce you to OOP concepts. You can download Turbo Pascal for free.

I used to work at a school that was considering teaching Java as the first language for programming/web students. The reality is that most languages can work as a first language, given suitably paced instruction materials.

i just started with C++... if you get the concepts right, its like a walk in the park.. if you are into web programming then start with Perl..
