Default A few basic website questions

Hi all,

I must admit i am new to the whole website building and designing scene and would appreciate any input you can give .First a bit of background, i am trying to build (actuallt still designing it) a website, which will basically need strong database capabilities and good graphics and had the following questions:

1. what platform should i use (Linux, Windows, other...)??
2. what programming language should i use?
3. what database should i use?

I would also appreciate any other information(or informative links) you could provide that could ease my quest.

Thanks the help,

Ehud

You should use a unix platform. PHP would be my language of choice and MySql would be my database of choice.

I would prefer the same as Sidewinder:

Platform: Unix
Language: PHP
Database: MySQL

There's still a lot of alternatives, so you don't have to choose these.
I think you should read about some of the platforms there is, languages, and databases, to find out what fits you.
Usually you say that some languages fits one platform better than another.
F.ex. ASP fits Microsoft, while PHP fits Unix.

You may find your language here
Categorical list of programming languages

... your platform here
List of operating systems
or here
Comparison of operating systems

... and your database here
Comparison of relational database management systems

I've made websites under Linux and Windows, and not really seen a difference between the two. Just make sure whatever you use has a text editor that you like using - that's the main thing because it's what you will spend most of your time with.

PHP Is definetly the language of choice.
SQL is the most populat option for databases, but there are general database languages that you can use. You write your code in a general language then "slot in" whichever database type your webserver uses. This makes it trivial to switch webservers with different database types - so a good idea for large projects.

php, mysql .... most linux releases have too many exploits... and because you are new to the website scene, use windows server, you'll find it easier to secure...
