Ok, this might sound crazy, but I'm interested in writing a program that requires input from the mic input (and therefore soundcard, I'm assuming). Basically, I want it to display the frequencies of the sounds coming in the input. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on which language I should program it in (I know Java the best, but I don't believe that will work, so any other language would be something I'd have to learn). I'm looking to learn whatever language is recommended, so don't base your decision on my knowledge, but rather which language you think is best/easiest to write this in. (Don't worry, it isn't for any sort of class project or anything graded... personal use only at this point.)
Thanks |

Audacity is an open-source project that can probably get you started with some of this. It's a sound recorder/editor. I know it supports mic input.

I've used audacity a lot before actually. Very nice piece of freeware software. Maybe I should be more specific. I do a lot of live sound mixing and studio recording. I've been looking for a simple Real Time Analyzer (plots the frequency of the incoming sound real time). I don't need anything fancy. All I want it to do is take the frequency of the sound coming in, and display it graphically. I figured I could also use it to help me learn more complicated programming. Obviously programs like this exist, but I wanted the challenge of doing it myself. Any thoughts?!? (Or am I just crazy?)
