Hi guys,
I was just making a list of things I'd like to accomplish in my career, things I'd like to know and all that and all I can really think of is a few programming languages.
So anyway, what I want to ask about is what are the most important things to know being a programmer? Are there any highly recommended skills? (Apart from the obvious.)
Are there any specific things an employer would like me to know? Or things that would make me stand out from other people applying for a really great job? I know it depends on what sort of job it is but I'm talking programming in general, software development. Keep in mind I'm studying Software Engineering right now.
I'd like serious answers if that's okay.
Thanks.![]()
I'm sure people can give you better answers, but what I would say is that as a general rule, if you are very efficient in one language, you will be able to move to and learn others fairly speedily (and the logic will be already there), so unless a extensive knowledge of a certain language is required, it doesn't really matter - it's more the thinking behind it.
Secondly, I'm finding (might be different if you are not in Britain), but the sole biggest thing employers are looking for these days is experience. So my advice would be to try and take any little jobs you can, and build up your CV. Be it freelance or doing a small amount of work for a freelance company, that kind of thing (which you might be able to do alongside your studies for a bit of extra cash!)![]()
Thanks for your answer so1i
Yeah I'm applying for a cadetship this year for one of the leading IT company's in my country, they're partnered up with my varsity and I'm like 90% sure I'll get in, that will a be great experience to add to my CV.
Definitely, that sounds great! Hope all goes well!
