Thread: C++ Recommendation Report |
For an assignment in my Technical Writing class I have to do a recommendation report. For the report I chose to recommend a course that should be taught at the college. As of now the college only teaches VB and Java for the programming degree, and C# as an elective. I thought it didn't make sense not to have C++ as one of the main languages required for a degree.
Before getting started on the assignment I have to come up with five 'credible' sources on C++. These can be magazines on the subject, websites dedicated to the field, industry publications, and things of that sort. It can't be Wikipedia, or just random sites pulled from Google/Yahoo/etc.
Are there any good, and credible, C++ (or Java since the report is going to be a comparison of these two languages.) websites that you like? I found a few websites with C++ magazines, but nothing worth using.
Also if you would like to comment with your views on the subject. To me it doesn't make sense to not teach C/C++ when it's used so widely.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I also found this site Stroustrup: C++, which appears to be maintained by Stroustrup, the designer of C++.

Why C++? Why not Haskell or LISP? This would be much more interesting. C++, Java and VB are all about same programming paradigm (mainly imperative OOP)

Something you may want to do is go on Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com, etc. If you look for programming jobs, you will find VERY few positions for C++, relative to Java/.NET. That may be part of the rationale for what you're being taught. C++ is meant for programming OSs, while Java and .NET are designed for networking and application programming.

I've expanded the report a bit to include Visual Basic. The reason for this is because the school currently offers Visual Basic as your choice for the programming degree (you either take two Java classes or two VB classes for the programming A.A.S. degree).
Originally my aim was basically to recommend C++ to be taught instead of one of the other languages, or why C++ would be a better choice. Now I'm focusing on why C++ would be a good option to add to the curriculum.
I'm working on the outline now.. hopefully all goes well.
