A recent poll wanted to know if programming standards are still in use in development organisations... and if they are controlled. The question was: does your organisation implement programming/coding standards?
None...............................20%
Yes, but without control.....49%
Yes, with control...............31%
Participants: 369
Source: Software development magazine: UML and agile approaches, programming, testing
A majority of the participating organisations have coding standards... and a majority does not control them ;o) What is the situation at your location? Does this lack of control really hurt?
We have coding standards. If you can't follow a few basic coding standards, odds are that you won't be able to do the actual coding, and thus won't last long. I don't know if you'd call that a control or not.
Some organisations have nice standards hidden in a server directory and they never control if the code delivered by the programmers respect these standards. It could be an automatic or a manual inspection of the code.
Yes we follow the Standards since we are working only with some small Business Solutions.
