I'm planning on getting a dialup connection for instant messaging and just a little web browsing (no downloads or anything real taxing). So I'm trying to decide wether to put the connection on Win98SE or Linux, because my PC is dual boot. Now, I'm wondering which is less venerable to viruses. I've heard 2 stories from several different people: 1. Linux's kernel has virus protection within it, and the complete opposite: 2. That Linux is full of problems (I haven't experience any myself so I don't know where this guys gets this) and it's more prone to viruses. However it's a given the Win98SE is very open to viruses, so no need to discuss that.
I'm just wondering if it's a better decision to go with Linux and which story is true??? |

I would go with linux hands down any day. Windows 98 was so buggy it killed me. Every time I opened a program I'd see a blue screen it seemed like. If you do go windows at least go Windows XP. If you go with Linux try Suse. Suse has a very easy to use GUI interface that comes bundled with YAST. YAST lets you edit the kernal without recompiling it.
I'd get a MAC before I ever get windows 98 again.

Linux is good for those who can handle ssh but if u want gui and windows apps to run than use windows ofcourse.

linux, no contest. Windows in all forms sucks, so why would an older one be different? Try slackware , or if your a complete noob ( no offense ) try ubunut, which is powerfull yet easy for begginers. It also comes with dialup tools and penguins pppoe tools to use dsl.

I also like Redhat Linux as another poster above. The peace of mind when it comes to viruses is well worth the trade offs.
