Default If you want to go into sysADMIN, learn perl!

i would have to say that PERL in addition to PHP, Java, and C, that it is a greate language to learn just because it is so powerful. If you will be working in a server environment, learn to use some basic BASH skills, and PERL...

PERL is a great language to learn. It runs on any OS and is very effective.

I have learned programming with Pascal, but it was a long time ago. I think that now you will find more free material and dvlp tools choosing something like Java. A good recommandation could be to find material on how to design/architect (object orientated) software before learning a language ;o) When you have a good idea on how to create your classes, programming is "just" a translation.

Borland has turbo versions of C++ and Delphi available now. I've got Turbo Delphi at home and, with a little practice, it seems to be pretty nice. There aren't any good tutorials for the Turbo version, though. It has a funky interface compared to Delphi 5.

So PERL is used in server programming? I might do something with servers when I'm older so I should learn it.

Perl can be. I made a perl program on our Actis (EDI) server that splits idocs. Works like a charm.

EDI = Electronic Data Interchange, I'm the EDI coordinator for a company.

Quote:
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the computer-to-computer exchange of structured information, by agreed message standards, from one computer application to another by electronic means and with a minimum of human intervention. In common usage, EDI is understood to mean specific interchange methods agreed upon by national or international standards bodies for the transfer of business transaction data, with one typical application being the automated purchase of goods and services.
Despite being relatively unheralded, in this era of technologies such as XML services, the Internet and the World Wide Web, EDI is still the data format used by the vast majority of electronic commerce transactions in the world.

Actis is an EDI Translator that runs on Redhat ES3.
