Abstraction sucks for a multitude of reasons.

Run time issues, efficiency, performance, etc etc.

It's a very good reason. Especially for beginners, .NET is ideal.

And not saying I'm a beginner!

I can see the attraction for Java. Multi-platform is important.

.NET isn't necessarily n00bish, ya know. Many business solutions run on .NET.
