You may want to try a few live CDs first, just to get a taste before committing to an install. Knoppix is very popular for that.

Slax is also a very good LiveCD. If you just want a desktop to play some movies and browse the internet, Slax is for you.

Well instead of a Live CD install the OS on Microsoft Virtual PC you will have the full linux OS in your win XP! (I have that) without any need to un install your Microsoft Os!

42! Wow. I don't have the time, or the patients to install 42 different OS'es. I have Vista and about 3 Linux flavors on 2 HD's. I like to stick with one(for me Fedora) and completely customize and soon master it . Ubuntu is what I recommend for starters.
