I've "discussed" that topic with MeTh0Dz (read: flamewar
), we didn't agree. But anyway.I think you would do well choosing at least C#. It seems like a not-too-bad language. But it is .NET, which I do not really like (although I'm a member of the .NET-fan social group ) C++ is a very very good language with possibilities for both low level and higher, more "modern" programming (OOP). I think you should learn it. It's great fun! And C++ programming is nothing, or not much, like ASM programming. Check it out?

One of the problems with trying to plan out your career language at this point is that the landscape keeps changing. When I started college, Pascal was one of the great languages. By the time I graduated, it was being replaced with Delphi. When the web started, CGI was the hot technology, now it's highly passe. There are a few languages that have longevity (C, C++, Java). There are others that look promising (PHP, JavaScript). Several languages have been very faddish. Ruby was hot for a while, and then faded again.
What will take you forward are a few things: Solid design skills, understanding algorithms, SQL, understanding usability concepts. Going onto Monster.com or careerbuilder.com will give you an idea of what people are looking for now, but not what they want in a few years when some languages become old-fashioned and people are looking for the next miracle language.

WingedPanther basically just said the languages that seem popular right now, might not be worth a **** thing by the time you are in the industry, and he gave examples and such.
He then said that C, C++, and Java have proven themselves over time.. You respond by saying that .NET, Java, and PHP are "famous" right now, as if to justify your decision. Hence you completely missed the point. |
