How many people actually care about MCSE in the industry these days?

133,399 x 2 ( the number of people who have been certified as MCSE 2003 engineers plus the number of people who hired them. A bit over a quarter million. Not a big number, but there are a few servers out there that run microsft products and many employers find being certified a useful benchmark when reviewing candidates. I heard that some Linux engineers were getting certs, too. Is that heresy or what? ( ) ( JK)

RHCE is a common linux cert, but my real question is how much value do people here place on those certs? I've seen people with degrees from reputable universities that don't have the drive to code their way out of a wet paper bag. Getting a cert doesn't guarantee they'll have the drive to be a useful employee.

I was being facetious about the linux cert. Like you, I would also like to know what the people here think of certs. There are surely some folks who got college degrees that don't have the drive to code basket weaving, but there are a lot who code like champions and whose achievement of getting a degree is a indication of their drive to succeed. The same is probably true of certs.
It has been my experience that good network engineers become better when they make the effort to cover all the marterial required for MCSE certification, and if they did it in a boot camp, no one can seriously question their drive. Boot Camps are grueling!
