Word 2003 Resizes Pages by Itself

I'm scanning in documents using an HP Scanjet 4850. The scanning software that comes with the printer provides an option to automatically convert images into various text formats, i.e. Word DOC, RTF, TXT, etc. However, Microsoft Word 2003 doesn't like the columns and for some reason automatically resizes the page from letter to A3 to accomodate it. Modifying the columns doesn't work, and if I try resizing the page or the margins, I get an error something like this (I'm repeating it from memory)

Increasing left margin causes column to become too small in unevenly sized columns.

I tried getting rid of the columns and then using Word to create evenly-spaced columns, but it doesn't do anything. Neither does shrinking the left margin. Can someone help?

Does it re size as soon as you open it? Maybe the Scanner is saving it on an A3 page... (Maybe for high Definition)
