ok, so heres the story:
i got a ubuntu 9.04 live disc off a friend, and was eager to try it. i liked the live disc so i decided to dual boot my laptop with it. I partitioned my 1tb external hdd (500gigs) and installed ubuntu on it. Problem was that when i turned my laptop on, it tried to load using the grub loader, which, of course could not be found unless my external hdd was plugged in. (which was a problem). I fixed this problem using EasyBCD 1.7.2 and reverting back to the vista bootloader. im pretty sure this may have deleted the ubuntu, because i can no longer open it, even when i have the hdd plugged in. So...
my plan is the "unpartition" the external hdd. partition it with less space (80gbs or so) and install ubuntu on it. Now, im not exactly sure how to go about this, or if installing ubuntu again will reinstate the grub loader as the default boot loader, and whether i will be able to assign the vista loader again, without destroying ubuntu.
so, anyone? where should i start?
thanks in advance![]()

Ubuntu should still be on your external hdd, all that has happened is that, by using EasyBCD, you have overwritten the MBR to use the vista bootloader rather than grub.
From what I remember it's possible to use EasyBCD to boot into linux, so this may be the easiest option.
You should be able to make some use of this guide. As you currently can't boot into Ubuntu you'll have to use the liveCD to backup the grub menu.
If there's a new way, I'll be the first in line.
But, it better work this time.
in easybcd, i copied some instructions that involved giving me the options to select ubuntu. so when i boot my laptop, i get "windows vista", "ubuntu" and another one concerning ubuntu.
Can you now boot into Ubuntu?

sorry, i was a bit vague there. No, i did this when i first reinstated the vista boot loader.
and it doesnt work.
Did you use the method outlined in the link above?
I tried using EasyBCD a while ago and the option for booting into Linux never seemed to work, but I never tried the option that installs NeoGrub.
Your other option is to create a small partition on your laptop hard drive and install grub there. This is definitely the harder option though.

ok, I've installed the neogrub.
i don't quite understand where to get the text that i need to put in the configure part?
where do i find that?
It'll be in /boot/grub/menu.lst on your Ubuntu partition. You'll need to use the liveCD to boot into Ubuntu and mount your external hdd. You can then copy the menu.lst file to your windows partition so you can access it in vista.

ok, i'll have to try that later tho.
Thank you very much for your help today![]()
