    software connect to linux

For Windows, you will need some software, such as Exceed to connect to Linux.
Is there any good alternative solution other than using exceed?
    Small is indeed important.
I need to help my class to get access to our matlab lab remotely and most of them, haha, why bother with huge stuff...

open source (free) is also a key...

    Thank you

In what sense are you trying to connect? Like a remote connection, a shell connection, something else?
Programming is a branch of mathematics.

yes it's remote access to our matlab in school. I can do this via ssh on Ubuntu either with -X or without -X windows. But for the class (since i need to give them the instruction), they are Windows users.

I am not quite sure with your question
But the matlab is on Linux server, we do have a Windows Matlab but for security reason only the Linux is open for remote access.

The system administrator told me to get a software like Exceed but it's a licensed software, i have to pay for it.

Exceed is horrible, IMO. You can do X11 forwarding using Putty fairly easy (putty is lightweight with no install) or you could use remote control software such as VNC (also lightweight).

I don't know what happened, the server denied NX service.
Been search around and those free remote client such as Putty, VNC are all command-line not GUI.

Putty is an SSH client. If you read the article I linked to above you'll see how to do X11 Forwarding which brings the Linux GUI client back to Windows remotely. Also, VNC lets you control the desktop of your Linux distribution and is not console at all (IE: 100% GUI). Check here: TightVNC: VNC-Based Free Remote Control Solution
