    Cloud Computing

How do you feel about the "Cloud Computing" which seems to be the buzz word/term on the Internet today?

    Wikipedia:
Cloud computing refers to the use of Internet ("cloud") based computer technology for a variety of services.[1] It is a style of computing in which dynamically scalable and often virtualised resources are provided as a service over the Internet[2][3][4][5]. Users need not have knowledge of, expertise in, or control over the technology infrastructure "in the cloud" that supports them[6].
I have to say with so many people talking about it and the benefits it offers, I've been sucked into it and think it is a great idea. How do you feel about it? Do you do it? Do you feel like John does and see the future of computing turning to this with computers just being mere thin clients (again)?

    Re: Cloud Computing

My biggest issue with cloud computing is security. It's all well and good to talk about "scalable" and "virtualised" resources, but the data is on a hard drive someplace. Imagine having a data breach on one of these data centers, thousands of companies' data could be compromised. I think I'll stick with keeping the data on my own hard drive.

Yes, but at the same time, its likely, depending on how the virtual filesystem is created, this data is spread out. For example, a 2.4gb ISO may take up the last 100mb of one HD, then store the rest on the next node. Without direct access to the database server that controls the index, you'll probly never find anything. Also, its likely that on-disk encryption is used.

    Re: Cloud Computing

The Internet would be the cloud. So cloud computing would be using services on the Internet in order to computer. IE, using Gmail in a browser as your email is cloud computing.

Using gmail for email, google docs for document processing, etc. For me, cloud computing is an interesting idea, but I haven't found a cloud compiler yet.

    Oh thanks Jordan.

I really like the idea of Cloud Computing. I actually had an debate with some guy that works with my Auntie about this once. There would be a security risk, but what hasn't these days?

True. I think everything comes with a risk to a certain degree. Cloud computing is an pretty neat though. We just ordered my wife a Dell Mini because all she needs to do is create excel documents, word documents, surf the web (Facebook/Gmail) and that is about it. My wife will be running Linux (and not even realize it).
