I recently bought a list of new components to almost fully upgrade my computer (save for my recently bought harddrive and some disc drives). I got an EVGA Geforce 8800 GT, Abit FH-IN9 SLi Motherboard, Intel core 2 duo 2.2ghz processor (lga 775), and two 1gb corsair ram sticks (i forget what bus speed they were, but they work in my MB, i checked before i left.) anyways, i got home and put everything together for the first time, and i forgot to put the power switch in. i put everything back in and made sure to get the power switches right. when i turned on the computer, all the led's on the mobo turned on, and it seemed like all the fans turned on, but a loud piercing sound came from the computer. i turned it off, took it all apart again, and found there was some dark, lead coloured residue on the processor, and it had rubbed off on the heatsink. i removed it with a napkin, placed it back in, made sure everything was back in its proper place, hooked it all up to my monitor, turned the computer on...and nothing again. What the hell did i do wrong?
Hmm I think this is going to be a hard thing to solve. But by "nothing again" what you mean? Nothing as in 'the PC is dead' or nothing as in 'the monitor did not display anything', did the mobo beep?
With all the new hardware changes, the problem is difficult to diagnose, but as TheComputerMaster mentioned, "nothing" is vague.
When you press the power button do the fans turn on? Can you hear the hard drive spin up? How about the CD drive? Are there any beeps? Do you have another computer you can check the video card in to make sure its not faulty?
The residue you found was a sealant between the CPU and heat-sink. It is suppose to be there and is usually white. As the previous two posts stated, what happens when the power button is pressed?
Could be a bad mobo.
the problem was only due to my own simple negligence. the second time i reconnected everything and it made that loud beep was due to the ram not being fully inserted, and the third time with no sound, but no power was a simple enough mistake to make i guess. for some reason, my power supply failed to come with a 8 pin connector for the CPU power. at the time of the third attempt to power it on, i had simply left that out because i 1. didnt know exactly what the 8 pin was for, and 2. was missing it. i have since been to my local microcenter and bought a 4 to 8 pin converter, and have been fine since :-D. thanks so much guys for the help though. haha i feel like a retard now
Glad you could get it fixed.![]()
