Im thinking of building a computer, because I want a desktop and want the experience of building it myself. Ive never done this before and was wondering if anyone had any pointers, or good sites, or any sorta useful tips?
Im thinking of putting linux on it, and I want it to be fast and responsive but dont need it to play games or anything too cpu intensive, just office and internet browsing mostly.
For parts I prefer to use New Egg.
Here is a tutorial I just wrote on how to build a computer in detail from start to finish.
Tips:
For the assembling of the computer:
-Make sure the case is the right size or larger than the motherboard. (Don't try to put a ATX size board into a microATX case)
-Take the motherboard out of the box and install the CPU and CPU fan using the motherboard box as a table. (Then install the io panel then the motherboard.)
-Use cable ties and zip ties so that the wiring is neat and airflow is good.
-Be sure when seating the RAM not to bend or twist the motherboard. (Weird stuff happens when you do this, I know from experience.)
-Before touching any computer component, be sure to ground yourself by touching the inside of the case! (Can't have you ruining your new parts cause of a little static discharge.)
For choosing the parts:
-Preferred Order of part selection CPU>Motherboard>RAM>GPU>PSU>Case (Other parts for the most part don't matter what order you choose them in.)
-Be sure your motherboard supports the speed of RAM and CPU you picked.
-Find drivers for your system/OS in advance (This helps a lot on time.)
-If you're not sure what level of parts you need in order for you computer to do it's tasks you can look up the specs of any prebuilt computer these days (They'll surf the net and do office work just fine.) and model your computer specs after those.
**Note** I think I am going to make some guides on how to build a custom computer, multi-monitor setup, and liquid cooling systems. Thanks for inspiring this idea. (Was looking for something to write a guide since I am still just a beginner level programmer, but I do know my way around hardware.) I wasn't aware that some members of the forum didn't know how to do these things (It's not a bad thing don't worry. I'm glad I can finally provide useful input for the forums.)

Step 1) make sure any hardware you're looking at is supported on Linux. Modems, wifi cards, and a few other items can be particularly finicky.
Techspot had a great article on building your own PC here.
Just make sure the Hardware will support Linux like WingedPanther stated.![]()

I would like to suggest you to have one book or ebook about building a desktop PC. This will make your task simple.
Make Sure U Be Careful With All The Parts And Try To Be A Bit Fiddly With The Littler Ones, Because I Am Not Sure If This Is Such An Issue Nowadays But Static Electricity From Our Bodies Can Short Some Computer Circuits.
Thanks for all the advice guys I appreciate it. And exicute, I'm sure some hardware articles would be appreciated, I cant be the only one who's not too knowledgeable on the matter.
