I'd have to aggree with outsider plus I think people should use the command line more often then relying on IDEs atleast when they first start out. I find an abundance of new C programmers who have no idea how to use a compiler and have absolutely no idea what an assembler and linker are. So the first time they step into the real world and instead of sitting in front of a windows platform they're sitting infront some UNIX variant like QNX and have to get on a forum and ask how to turn a multiple source code project into a single executeable/output file.

Saying you can optimize a program is like saying you understand how a program works on every level of every facet on a specific machines configuration.
No theres nothing wrong with command lines, I love command lines. And I agree, I barely knew what a linker did until I started learning assembly. (interfaced with c)
