buying domains?

Would it be wise to buy up various different domains like .com .ca . net .org and so on for your website? I guess if you thought your website was going to do well or should you buy them up later as your website slowly started to accumulate traffic?

I read on that is what people do so that they don't have to worry about buying them later at a premium or having to worry about knock offs or copycats?

I don't think it is a bad idea although I usually don't buy the different domain types for my sites.
