As one sits in class, not only is it boring enough being there, sometimes a teacher may force students to complete projects that mean nothing and do not amount to a higher education at all. I agree that knowing how to do certain things may increase a learning experience, but just to give busy work is ridiculous.

Some of the teachers I had in highschool would admit to giving busy work. When asked why, the would respond "we have better things to do, at the moment". I believe some teachers view teaching along the lines of babysitting. There are those times when you think they are giving you "busy work" though, and it actually turns out to be something helpful.

When I was teaching math at a two year college, we had 2.5 hour long classes, 5 days a week, for 5 weeks. I would give about 30 problems a night, not as busy work, but because I wanted my students to know how to do the problems by reflex. When I went to high-school, they complained that I gave them 4 problems a night, and they didn't learn the material nearly as well.

As a former teacher, all I can say is that some students made me feel like they wanted me to be a babysitter.
