How it all started...

So I was thinking this morning about how I got started in programming and figured I would share the story.

When I finally settled on a degree I decided to go for a B.A. Computer Science:Information Systems. My cousin has the same degree and he has done very well. I also figured that it would give me options to be a programmer or be on the operations side of IT. So I started the degree plan and one summer decided it was time for a new job. I had a friend who helped me get a job as an estimator for a construction supply company. I worked there for 3 days when my cousin called me and said "Hey... You're going for a computer degree right?" When I answered yes he replied "Well... You want a job?" So I jumped at the offer and came to the office for an interview. I initially thought I was going to be working helpdesk like him but they had other plans. I had an interview with the Programming side of things. I was not going to turn my nose up at the job and I took it.

Talk about knowing the right people and being in the right place at the right time. So I have been a programmer in the field for about 1 year and still going strong.

My question to you is how did you get started in programming?

I actually got my degree in math, and taught for several years while I taught myself programming. I got a job as documentation/backup trainer, but in my first class proved that I was really a programmer. I was given a few more tests (that I passed) and now work full time as a programmer.

That's very interesting. What language do you primarily program in? What type of programming do you usually do?

good story, someone told me before "its not who you are, its who you know".
i started programming things for pure fun and was planning on getting a training, but i couldnt find any.
when i lost hope of getting a training (internship) , some guy showed up at college asking for the best student in 4th year(final year) in programming field , just as i was going out on my way home a class-mate ran after me to tell me that there might be a job for me. then that guy turned out to be a great boss looking for young programmers to develop a new back-end website for his company and now im still working on it

I started out with classic asp. I do a lot of ASP.NET now with C#. I've also been working with Java and I'm looking into developing with the Google App Engine for experience.

I am starting... can't say started, I'm in those days where you are still accumilating PDF's and other material that helps you learn. I recently graduated with an M.I.S from the Lebanese American University. I got a job as an intern at UNDP (United Nations Development Program) and now I got a task to do an inventory tracking system. Any help and guide would be great!

I'm working with C# and SQL 2008

Inventory tracking shouldn't be to hard. It all depends on how you set it up. The hardest part (for me) is setting up the tables in the database correctly. How were you planning on implementing that? What are the guidelines? Sounds like an interesting project.

I knew I read someone's blog about how they got into programming since that's what gave me the idea, but lol woops, I really didn't know it was yours, had basically the same title and introduction too, must have seemed like I copied you ;s. It's deleted now anyway, was basically like a novel.

That's a really lucky story, if your cousin never made the decision to study a B.A. in Computer Science you probably wouldn't be where you are right now, right?

It's so weird thinking about the "what could have been"'s. I have no idea where my life would have taken me had I never gotten depressed and met computers. I hated them up till that stage!
