Compulsive learning

Posted by DarkLordCthulhu, 20 March 2012 - - - - - - · 886 views

I've been away for a few weeks - over a month in fact. If you're wondering why, it's because I haven't really been focusing on programming lately. My interests have shifted towards pure mathematics, and I've been doing a lot of personal studies in that area. Up to this point I haven't made much of an effort to learn college-level mathematics, so I...

Some things I've been noticing

Posted by DarkLordCthulhu, 31 January 2012 - - - - - - · 833 views

It seems Microsoft's marketing strategies have been going steadily downhill. Here are some things I've noticed.

1. They can't put attractive people in their ads.
If you look at a banner ad for an iPhone or Android, you'll probably see a hot girl holding a phone. Ads for Microsoft products tend to show homely people and/or people in business suits....

100 skills every geek should have

Posted by DarkLordCthulhu, 27 January 2012 - - - - - - · 3424 views

I've found quite a lot of pages on skills that geeks should have in order to ascend to the rank of geekdom. A lot of them, of course, are written by people who have no idea what geekhood is all about (pseudo-geeks I call them). Take this page for example. This is just one of...

Thoughts on declarative programming

Posted by DarkLordCthulhu, 03 January 2012 - - - - - - · 736 views

Hello again. I'm making this post from Lynx, per my decision to move to the command-line (detailed in my last blog post). I've never posted an entire blog in Lynx, and I'm still trying to get the hang of it, so the formatting might come out kind of funny.

I've started doing more with TeX and troff, the two primary text formatters for Unix. For those of...

Moving to the CLI

Posted by DarkLordCthulhu, 18 December 2011 - - - - - - · 718 views

I have recently made the decision to move as much of my computer life as possible to the terminal. This means finding CLI alternatives to GUI apps that I use, and possibly learning to better utilize the command-line apps I can use now. Mind you, I'm already a command-line junkie and use the terminal every day. But now I'm taking it a step further; I plan...

Open letter to Steve Ballmer

Posted by DarkLordCthulhu, 08 December 2011 - - - - - - · 414 views

I'm not going to bother writing to Steve Ballmer directly as I know he doesn't have the time to read all his emails, so I just thought I'd put this on CodeCall for the world to see:

Dear Steve,

I understand that your job carries great responsibility and it must be a challenge to live up to Bill Gates, so you must feel a lot of pressure to dominate the...

Scientific illiteracy

Posted by DarkLordCthulhu, 26 November 2011 - - - - - - · 504 views

It has been said many times that how much one thinks one knows is inversely proportional to how much one actually knows.

Case in point: Conservapedia. For those of you who aren't aware, Conservapedia is an online Wiki set up by right-wing conservatives to balance out Wikipedia, the premise being that Jimmy...

Linux fanboyism

Posted by DarkLordCthulhu, 25 November 2011 - - - - - - · 522 views

I am what a lot of people would call a Linux fanboy. I'm not ashamed to admit it. I'm not one of those @$$holes who yells at people for using Windows and lectures them about Wine, software freedom, etc., but I am a devout Linux user and a religious follower of the philosophy it represents.

Linux fans get a lot of flak from Windows users, not just the...

TCP/IP: a formal education

Posted by DarkLordCthulhu, 17 November 2011 - - - - - - · 336 views

Okay, so I'm almost done reading Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment and I'm stuck on System V IPC; can't get message queues to work. I looked for some example code online and found a whole lot of interesting stuff, including this one website full of Linux tutorials. I found some material, though I didn't read it, realizing that what I...
