Thumbs up Coldfusion 8

Okay so what gives!!!! Coldfusion comes out and nobody talks about it? Okay, fine I will.

Anyways, Coldfusion 8 was released on July 30th 2007 in the surprise of the night. Adobe even had a nice press release for the public:

Quote:
Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced the immediate availability of Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software. ColdFusion 8, a powerful development tool for building dynamic Web sites and Internet applications, increases developer productivity, integrates with complex enterprise environments, and delivers rich and engaging experiences for users. Since May 2007, more than 14,000 developers have actively participated in the ColdFusion 8 public beta, praising the new capabilities in this latest version….

Of course, Adobe has no intentions of increasing its user base: $649 to upgrade, and a retail price tag of $1,299 for the full version of CF8 standard. CF8 Enterprise is no cheaper; $3,750 to upgrade, and $7,499 for the full version.

Its a shame that this intimidating price tag is still haunting the CF community. Unfortunately, it will scare off many potential new users, but thankfully I don’t think Coldfusion as a whole has anywhere to go but up!

So for those of you who don't use it, thanks! You keep the jobs open for people like me

Why don't they make this free so it can compete with PHP and Perl? I don't understand who actually pays to use this stuff.

Question

Its Adobe. Thats the only reason I can give you.

Many corporations will spend the money for the server. But if you yourself want to play with it, you can download the localhost server. then after you finish a site, you can host it somewhere. The downside is that places like Igodaddy.com will make you pay like $10 extra, because of CF's price.

Its a get-trade thing. If you have the money for it, it can be worth it.

Hello there,

At least Adobe gives a way a free trial version of the coldfusion server. However, that only lasts about 30 days...

I stopped using the trial version awhile ago. I just upload everything directly to my server and use their coldfusion instead of purchasing it myself. That is bad for development but it works well if you know it pretty flawlessly.

The neat thing about version 8 of coldfusion is that it is supposely seamless with version 7. I see that they finally came out with a zipping feature too, as well as an improvement to cfdirectory.

Sincerely,
Travis Walters

ColdFusion is a nice development language, but costs to use. I prefer it to ASP, but haven't used PHP to be able to compare with it.
