    Post CodeCall: A Month in Code, October

    It has been a while since the last CodeCall newsletter and this one will be a bit different. Most of the content of this newsletter was created by members of CodeCall.

    1) Coder Battle #2
    After some debate we have finally released the Coder Battle #2! This battle involves creating your own sorting algorithm using CSV files. The winner will receive 40 points of rep which brings you closer to free CodeCall merchandise!

    For more information (and to enter) visit: http://forum.codecall.net/<wbr>games/11504-coder-battle-2-<wbr>sorting.html

    2) Win $100 (Contest)
    As many of you are aware, CodeCall Contest #6 will end this month on the 15th. At the time of writing Xav holds the highest position with 2116 points. First place winner will receive $100 and the second/third place will each receive $25.

    There is still plenty of time to win! Earning points is as easy as posting. Each post earns you 1 credit, a thread earns you 5 and a tutorial earns you 20!

    3) Joys of Reputation by Xav
    Anyone who has posted anything at all at CodeCall will have seen me, Xav. I am the new top poster here (replacing the moderator TcM) and I also have a ridiculously high Rep Power of 70, meaning that I only need to +rep you three times and you are a GuRu.

    So how did I achieve this? Mainly begging and crying. Tutorials also helped. Telling jokes and generally posting lots contributed as well. The main thing is - you have to feel the reputation running through your veins. The power within.

    And before anyone carts me away to a psychiatrist, I just want to remind people this. The great Carlos Castineda once said:

    “If a warrior is to succeed at anything, the success must come gently, with a great deal of effort but with no stress or obsession.”

    Well, I am a Code Warrior at the moment, so it's a good thing I'm not obsessed.

    4) Why CodeCall? by Brandon W
    I would just like you to take some time to read through this little article so you understand what we have to offer for you! We are not just a one site network; we actually have multiple different sites if programming is not your thing! Visiting these sites can also allow you to win real life money!

    CodeCall is the main place on the web where all the big programmers come to talk and help out each other; some are there to find jobs others are there for the contests to win money! Did you know that 90% of the questions asked on CC are answered in a day!

    On the CC website you can see our blog. Our blog is made up of all the latest programming news and general computer news, but it is not limited there! Reviews of books are also posted! Which means if you are confused on which book to get, maybe you should read the review from a member of CC that has already read it?

    Maybe blogging is your thing? But maybe a Wiki is? Well we have that covered too; CC has a programming/computer Wiki that is slowly growing in articles. So why not drop by and read a few, maybe even edit or write an entirely new article that you think others will like.

    So what happens if you are not interested in programming but want to learn about the OS that will one day take over Windows? Well visit http://www.forum.totalpenguin.<wbr>com/ to learn about Linux! It is a fairly new forum so go there, register and become well known as the site grows in popularity!

    5) What is Programming? by WingedPanther
    Programming is the art of giving precise instructions to a complete idiot that will do exactly what you say and has no concept of what you mean. That may sound harsh, but it is the truth. Programming is an art, and the key is you are giving instructions to a machine that often gives the illusion of being quite smart.

    What this means is you have to be a problem solver. You have to be creative. You have to be able to think at a very detailed level. Finally, you have to be able to phrase the results of all the creative, detailed thinking in a very precise way or the idiot box in front of you will get confused (logic error) or just not understand (compiler error). The good news is, the language is easy (regardless of the language), it's just the other stuff that's hard

    Imagine building a website for your company that displays 3D Interface for the products it has, or building an online internet game that users launch from their web browser, dream no more, VRML 2.0(stands for Virtual Reality Modeling Language) offers a standard file format to represent 3D graphics inside web browsers and making interactive online interface.

    Extension
    The file extension associated with VRML is “.wrl” which is basically a text file with unique structure similar to ]. To display the 3D objects in your browser you will only need to install relatively small plug-in for your ].

    Contents
    The .wrl file includes:

    * File Header (ex: #VRML v2.0 utf8)
    * Comments
    * And “scene graph“ that includes the actual 3d ]

    History
    It was first introduced in 1994, known as VRML, which was full of flaws. In 1997 VRML2 was launched and still widely used today. There is an ever increasing number of web sites containing VRML models.

    7) GWT by morefood2001
    Do you own a website or maintain a website? Did you ever want to make your website flashy without having to learn JavaScript or Ajax? I found myself answering yes to both of these questions a month ago, and I began my search for software that is capable of making an Ajax site without knowing much about JavaScript. Google is the answer to our needs if you answered yes before. Google created a web toolkit that provides libraries and a Java to JavaScript compiler that allows the programmer to use a more familiar Java language to develop flashy websites.

    The Google Web Toolkit is available at http://code.google.com/<wbr>webtoolkit/. This toolkit makes it extremely easy to integrate your website with eclipse to build powerful web 2.0 sites in a fraction of the time it would take to create one in Ajax. Third party libraries have evolved to build off from this framework to provide web desktops, fully functional tables, and photo galleries. I would recommend the GWT to anyone who wants to create a really appealing website without having to code everything in Ajax.

    Perhaps we should start every month. I particularly liked the user contributed articles.

    Also, it should be noted, despite what this thread states, CodeCall Contest #6 ends 11/20 not 11/15.
