JavaScript is run on the user's browser, as a client-side language - therefore, you can make changes to the page at realtime (known as a dynamic webpage).
JavaScript and Java have nothing in common. In fact, the names are only coincidentally similar. Originally JavaScript was called LiveScript, but due to trademark issues it was renamed as "JavaScript". As I said, no relation based on the names.
