I have tried out both Notepad ++ and Notepad 2, and I found that I liked Notepad 2 better. It seems to conform to the simple style of notepad more than Notepad ++. I find the syntax highlighting very helpful for interpreted languages (primarily HTML), but for compiled languages, just use an IDE.
